Change and deprecation plan
As various instances of SRM concepts are added or declared obsolete, this International Standard and its authorized registered items will evolve. Declaring an SRM concept instance obsolete is called deprecation. To ensure the long-term coherence and orderly evolution of his International Standard, this annex defines processes for change or deprecation of instances of SRM concepts. This annex also defines how a deprecated SRM concept instance may be reinstated. Change, deprecation, or reinstatement is in accordance with ISO/IEC 9973 (see [ISO/IEC 9973]).
Redefinition of an SRM concept instance means changing that item to such an extent that it would require amendment or republication. That is, the item would no longer represent the same concept instance, or the SRM code and/or SRM label would no longer denote the same concept instance.
Reuse of an SRM code or SRM label means assignment of that SRM code or SRM label to denote a different concept instance than originally assigned.
To ensure stable evolution while protecting the investment of users, care shall be taken when changes are made to SRM concept instances, whether they were originally defined in this International Standard or later by registration. The following rules apply both to changes to this International Standard by amendment or republication and to changes to SRM registered items:
a) Changes to the extent allowed in corrigenda, including editorial changes that clarify without changing the semantic meaning or any of the associated data, may be made to an SRM concept instance in this International Standard.
b) Changes to an SRM concept instance in this International Standard not permitted by a) shall be accomplished by deprecation following the procedure defined in G.3.2.
c) No changes of any type shall be made to any SRM concept instance defined by registration. Instead, the existing SRM registered item shall be deprecated following the procedure defined in G.3.3.
d) No SRM code or SRM label shall be redefined or reused except by the process of reinstatement defined in G.4.
The committee responsible for the development of this International Standard shall publish and maintain a standing document containing lists of all deprecated SRM concept instances. For each deprecated instance, the document shall contain the reason for the deprecation, the identification of the document(s) that implemented the deprecation (amendments, republications, or registration proposals) and a link to the current online version of the deprecated concept instance. This document shall be made available on the World Wide Web and shall be referenced by hyperlink from both the SRM register area of the ISO International Register of Graphical Items and future amended or republished editions of this International Standard.
The following rules apply to deprecation of SRM standardized concept instances:
a) A deprecated SRM concept instance shall be moved by amendment or republication to an annex containing a table of deprecated concept instances in the applicable SRM concept category within this International Standard. This International Standard contains Annex J for this purpose.
b) The row(s) in the tables that previously defined the SRM standardized concept instance shall be removed by amendment or republication. There shall be no indication in the table itself that the entry that once occupied that row is now deprecated. Note that by G.2(d), removed SRM labels or SRM codes shall not be reused except by reinstatement.
c) The deprecated SRM concept instance shall be marked as being deprecated within the register.
d) Once an SRM concept instance has been published in Annex J of this International Standard for a period of at least five years, it may be deleted from that annex (and therefore this International Standard) by amendment or republication.
The following rules apply to deprecation of SRM registered items:
a) Registered items cannot be modified, only deprecated.
b) The deprecated SRM registered item shall be marked as being deprecated within the register.
c) At each amendment or republication of this International Standard, all items in the register that are marked as deprecated shall be added to Annex J of this International Standard and deleted from the register.
Reinstatement provides an orderly process whereby this International Standard and the register may promote previously deprecated SRM concept instances back to standardized status.
A deprecated SRM concept instance may be reinstated by moving it from Annex J back into the appropriate main table defining such an entry in Clauses 5 through 9 and Annexes D and E of this International Standard. The process of amendment or republication of this International Standard shall be used to accomplish this move.
Following the procedure defined in G.3.3, deprecated SRM registered items are deleted from the register and moved to Annex J of this International Standard. Therefore, a formerly deprecated SRM registered item can be reinstated by following the procedures of G.4. A deprecated SRM registered item that is reinstated before it has been moved to Annex J though the process of amendment or republication, shall be reinstated in the register.
